Mount Zion United Methodist Church
Brief Description of the Mt. Zion Addition Project:
The primary objective of this project was to resolve a long standing-problem for a
historically designated church built in 1870 -- the sanctuary was located on the second
floor with the only access by way of two separate and very narrow staircases. This, of
course, made it difficult if not impossible for the Church to carry on normal operations
such as funerals, because of the inability to transport caskets through this narrow passage.
Columbia’s responsibility was to resolve this problem through a comprehensive redesign of
the entire existing 3000sf facility which ultimately included a 3000sf addition and elevator.
Because of the historical nature of the church, several presentations were made by Columbia and
its consultants to the Architectural Review Board on behalf of the church to the Town of Leesburg.
Upon securing all necessary approvals and permits, construction began immediately and was completed
on time to meet the church’s 132-year anniversary celebration.
