Department of the Army--Fort McNair, Washington, DC

Brief Description of Department of the Army Project (Officers’ Quarters):

Columbia was contracted to perform extensive renovation work on fifteen (15) historical residences located at Fort Henry McNair in Washington, D.C. The homes were built in the early 1800’s and are occupied by the families of high ranking Officers of the United States Army. The homes are over 100 years old and consist of approximately 6000 square feet. The construction type is masonry, wood framing, plaster and drywall interior walls and slate roof over wood decking.

The main objective in the design/build process was to update and enhance the infrastructure (mechanical, electrical & plumbing systems) of the homes as well as to expand and update the main kitchen and bathrooms. Extensive demolition was performed to expand bathroom areas, replace interior trim, doors, interior stairs and interior finishes as well as a new one-story addition onto the kitchen. In addition, the existing central plant heating and cooling system was supplemented through the installation of a new 15 ton, 3 zone, high velocity forced air system with a backup heat pump/air conditioning system integrated into the central system to ensure stand alone capability.

Our responsibility was not only to provide total architectural and engineering design but to provide detailed cost estimating and full construction services. The project was completed on time and on budget.
